The Role of Financial Investigation in Combatting Modern Slavery
Produced by Justice and Care, with support from Hogan Lovells and in partnership with STOP THE TRAFFIK, this report draws on insights from a practitioner workshop bringing together experts from law enforcement, government, financial institutions, and the private sector.
The report explores how financial investigation can be a powerful but underused tool in tackling modern slavery. It highlights how following the money can help identify perpetrators, disrupt organised crime, and secure justice for victims through asset recovery and compensation.
Key recommendations include increasing prioritisation and resourcing for financial investigations, improving information sharing between financial institutions and law enforcement, enhancing the use of technology such as AI and machine learning, and ensuring that the proceeds of crime benefit victims.
The report calls for greater collaboration across sectors to strengthen the UK’s response to modern slavery and demonstrates how financial investigation can play a central role in both prevention and justice.
